Phil Clarke says crucial video referee call was ‘too quick’ and ‘not forensic’

Going into the second half of their game against St Helens, Leeds Rhinos were in a tricky position.

It was set up like a game of cat and mouse.

The Rhinos led but were ravaged by injuries so it was a case of could they stay ahead of the Saints?

They conceded early with Curtis Sironen making it 12-10 before it looked like Justin Sangare had restored Leeds’ eight point lead after a good break by Tom Holoryd.

The French forward had to juggle the pass however and it was deemed that Agnatius Paasi had touched the ball thus meaning a knock on would be awarded.

However, Sky Sports’ Phil Clarke branded this as inconclusive:

“It’s going to be a game of opinions, I understand that, but for me that’s inconclusive from that angle that Agnatius Paasi hand touches the ball there.

“I can’t clearly see that.”

Kyle Amor added: “It is very very difficult to call that.”

Then Clarke pointed out that it was possible Jonny Lomax tackled Sangare without the ball and said if the video referee was forensic more would be looked at:

“Does Jonny Lomax tackle him without the ball there? If you want to be forensic that is what a referee would do. He would take longer and look at every aspect of that.

“I am happy to go with the official’s decision and the referee pointed and awarded the try so I would go with the official’s decision if you want to go that way.”
