Phil Clarke reveals who Wakefield should appoint as new coach

One of the main talking points on Sky Sports last night before Castleford’s fixture with St Helens kicked off was who will replace Chris Chester as Wakefield head coach.

Names have been linked to the job, including former Leeds Rhinos great Brian McDermott and former London Broncos boss Danny Ward.

But, Sky Sports pundit Phil Clarke believed a combination would be the best way forward for Trinity.

“Unless you work at the club it would be hard for me to say who would be the right person to take over,” Clarke said.

“Maybe it’s a combination of a Brian McDermott type experience with someone like Danny Orr and Danny Ward for the on-field coaching side of things, but of course it’s going to be financial issues.

“Could Wakefield afford a set-up like that?”

It remains to be seen in which direction Trinity move, but with just four wins from 17 games and with relegation confirmed for 2021, the West Yorkshire club will be looking over their shoulders.
