Phil Clarke doesn’t want to see these two players feature for England against France

This week England take on France in the first step towards the 2025 World Cup in France.

After the heartbreak of last year’s semi-final defeat, England are looking to make sure they go further in two and half years’ time.

Thus there has been a lot of talk of how Shaun Wane should approach the game against France this weekend.

Phil Clarke has called for Shaun Wane to not pick the best players but players for the future.

Thus, he doesn’t believe George Williams and Jonny Lomax should necessarily start ahead of Mikey Lewis this week.

“I wouldn’t pick the best players at the moment. I think I would pick the younger players like Mikey Lewis instead of George Williams and Jonny Lomax who you might say are our best stand-off and scrum-half,” he said on Sky Sports.

“I think international exposure for young players helps them develop 25% better than they would so I think the exposure for younger players is a better opportunity.

“It is two years until the World Cup and I think seeing them play here is a better use of the time they have got.”

Jon Wilkin added: “Without doubt give a few more combinations. He has a real opportunity to pump some confidence in some young players who will be important in the World Cup in two years time.”
