Phil Clarke claims Hull FC should have had an eight point try against Wigan Warriors

Hull FC shocked Wigan Warriors in the opening 17 minutes of the game tonight taking a 12-0 lead.

However, it could be worse for Wigan with Sky Sports pundit Phil Clarke claiming Hull FC could have had an eight point try as Jake Clifford scored Hull’s second try as he ducked through the Wigan defence reaching out to score and Bevan French tried to stop him from grounding the ball by kicking it out of his hands.

This is why Phil Clarke felt the Black and Whites should have been awarded a penalty try instead.

“I am surprised Hull FC haven’t been awarded a penalty try here,” Clarke said after the try had been awarded by the video referee.

“They try and prevent the ball being grounded and Bevan French uses his foot and in most games that I have seen in the last 10 years that is penalised.

“That is not allowed anymore and Wigan might be lucky to only concede six points instead of eight points.”

Jon Wilkin meanwhile praised the try from Hull FC which exploited the fact French had been in the tackle before:

“It is smart play from Jake Clifford because he realises that Bevan French is in the last tackle and he is in charge of the defensive line and Jake Clifford takes advantage of a quick ruck and it is a fantastic finish.”

At halftime Hull FC lead 14-6.
