Peter V’Landys offers fresh update on NRL and Super League talks and doubles down on “train crash” claim

NRL & Super League

After talks between the NRL and Super League seemingly quietened, Peter V’Landys has provided an update on where the two competitions are at in terms of a proposed deal.

V’Landys, who is the head of the Australian Rugby League Commission, has been one of the spearheads of a partnership alongside Andrew Abdo and the RFL.

Meetings took place both in Las Vegas and the Australian Magic Round about the NRL potentially investing and/or taking control of Super League in order to prolong its long-term sustainability.

However, with the TV broadcast deal being at the forefront of the Australian competition’s priorities as of late, talks with Super League were put to one side. Now those negotiations have been completed, V’Landys is hoping they can quickly return to talks with the northern hemisphere

The NRL supremo told SEN Radio: “We’ve been totally focused in the last two-three months on this broadcast deal, so we now will turn our minds to Super League.

“It’s important for us to have Super League strong and vibrant.”

V’Landys has said previously that Super League is heading for a “train crash” if the NRL do not step in to help, be that financially or logistically. He has again used that analogy to describe the state of the British game at present.

“There’s no secret that they’ve got financial problems over there, and if they don’t fix them, they’ll have a massive train crash. We don’t want to see that.

“We want to see Super League thrive in England. It’s important to us, it’s important to the international game, it’s important to sell the game globally.

“So, we’ll certainly be looking at the Super League in much greater detail in the next few weeks, and hopefully we’ll be able to do some deal.”

V’Landys’ comments come just over a week after RL Commercial’s Managing Director, Rhodri Jones said that they were expecting communication from the NRL to arrive within the next fortnight, so the signs show that both parties are in agreement, and conversations will continue to take place as we head towards the back-end of the season.
