Peter Mata’utia reveals why he left Castleford Tigers for Warrington Wolves

When Peter Mata’utia left the Castleford Tigers at the end of the 2021 Super League season, Tigers fans were disappointed.

The South Sea Islander had almost become part of the furniture at the club after making the move midway through 2019.

69 appearances later, however, and Mata’utia was on the move, following head coach Daryl Powell over the Pennines to the Warrington Wolves.

Why? Because of one man – Powell himself.

“I love that he lets me be,” Mata’utia said on Sky Sports after winning the man-of-the-match performance earlier on in the season.

“When you’re happy off the field that’s what you do best.

“It was a hard decision to leave Cas as I loved my time there but rugby wise I wanted to follow him – he was the main reason why I left Cas and I’m proud to be here.”

When asked just why he thought so highly of the former Leeds Rhinos and Featherstone Rovers boss, Mata’utia replied: “He’s  very challenging and he always wants the best out of us.

“At Cas he turned alright players into good players – Jordan Turner for example he was the buy of the year last year but he didn’t play much the year before.”
