Paul Wellens suggests he was shocked by former St Helens player’s Super League move

On Thursday, Champions St Helens take on one of the sides tipped at the start of the season to challenge for their title: Huddersfield Giants.

The game takes place on Thursday on Sky Sports and will see the Saints take on former player  Kevin Naiqama.

Naiqama left St Helens as a three time Champion and as the 2021 Harry Sunderland Award winner to join Sydney Roosters in the NRL.

However, he shocked everyone by coming back to England with the Giants and ahead of the game Paul Wellens said on Saints TV: “When Kevin decided to go back home we thought we’d probably seen the last of him but he’s a brilliant guy and he was a very well-liked member of this group.

“It’ll be great to catch up with him but hopefully he won’t have too much success in the game.”

Naiqama scored in the Giants’ last game against Wigan.

Wellens also gave his assessment of Ian Watson’s Huddersfield side:

“They’re a very attritional side, very work-man like and as patient a side as there is in Super League. They’re happy to wait and stay in set for set grind and that’s really commendable. We’re quite similar in ourselves so I think it makes for a very tough game in that respect.”
