Paul Wellens provides fresh Konrad Hurrell update amid centre’s uncertain future

St Helens are yet to make a decision on Konrad Hurrell’s future with the club as he edges towards the end of his contract at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Hurrell looks set to miss the remainder of the Super League season after picking up a neck issue that has required surgery. The Tongan went under the knife last weekend just before the Saints bucked their five-game losing run in dominant fashion against Hull FC and Wellens was pleased to report the operation was a success.

However, it remains to be seen if Hurrell will pull on the red vee of St Helens again. The centre has been with Saints since joining from Leeds Rhinos for the 2022 Super League season.

He has made 63 appearances for the club in that time, with 26 tries coming along the way, with his last outing coming in June when the club fell short against Thursday night’s opponents Salford Red Devils. The contract extension Hurrell signed in June 2023 expires this autumn, though, and while the club do have the option to extend his stay by another year, it remains to be seen if they will look to keep him on.

“Not as yet,” Wellens said when asked if the club were close to a decision regarding Hurrell’s future. “He only had surgery on Saturday morning.

“That went really well, I’m pleased to report it went really well so Konrad can start his recovery process now. The brilliant side of Konrad is that he came around from his operation and the first thing he was doing is getting in touch to congratulate the team on finally getting a win after a few weeks.

“Konrad is all for the team and always has been. We’ll support him in the best way we can and any decisions around his future will be kept at bay for now.”
