Paul Wellens names strong St Helens squad to face West Hull with new signings included

St Helens boss Paul Wellens has named a strong squad to take on community club West Hull this weekend. The Saints will travel to East Yorkshire to take on the amateur outfit in the third round of the Challenge Cup with the contest being played at Craven Park, the home of Super League outfit Hull KR.

Wellens was expected to name an inexperienced side to take on West Hull and he has included a host of youngsters in the travelling squad. But, he has also included a number of stars to give those NCL players the opportunity to test themselves against some of Super League’s household names.

The inclusions of Jack Welsby, Alex Walmsley and Konrad Hurrell will certainly set pulses racing at Johnny Whiteley Park, while new signings Tristan Sailor and Lewis Murphy have also been included.

Senior faces such as Joe Batchelor, Matt Whitley and James Bell can also expect to get a run out alongside the club’s promising young talent, which includes Harry Robertson and Owen Dagnell, who saw his new deal at the Totally Wicked Stadium announced on Wednesday.

Saints fans will have to wait a little longer to see Kyle Feldt in competitive action then it seems, while Jonny Lomax, Mark Percival, Daryl Clark, Matty Lees, Curtis Sironen, Morgan Knowles, Moses Mbye and Agnatius Paasi have all been spared the trip to the other side of the M62.

Interestingly, the clash will be St Helens’ first against amateur opposition since 1969 when the club beat Maryport in the Lancashire Cup.
