Paul Wellens ‘ecstatic’ as St Helens secure future of outstanding young talent

St Helens

St Helens have tied down the long-term future of outstanding young talent Harry Robertson, the club have announced. The teenager playmaker has penned a new four-year deal with the Saints, ensuring he will remain at the Totally Wicked Stadium until the end of the 2028 Super League season at the very least.

The deal comes as a huge boost for the club, with Robertson committing himself to the Saints as he continues to develop. Robertson announced himself as one of the most promising young players in the country last season with his performances under Paul Wellens earning rave reviews.

He made just nine appearances for the club in 2024 but after his first pre-season campaign with the Saints first-team, he’ll be hoping to kick on this season, learn from the likes of Jack Welsby and Tristan Sailor and secure even more Super League experience.

“I’m made up,” Robertson told St Helens’ official site. “I didn’t want anything more than to sign for the club for another four years, so I am very happy.

“It has all gone pretty fast since making my debut, playing nine big games, and then signing my new contract, it’s gone very quickly.

“I want to just help the team in any way I can, we all know that we want to go out and win trophies, and I’ll do anything to help the team. I feel like I have still got more in me, it was all a bit of a crazy experience last year, I want to get out there and feel comfortable to show what I can do.”

Speaking on his side’s latest contract announcement, head coach Wellens said: “I’m ecstatic that Harry’s committed his long-term future to the club. He is quite clearly an exciting player and a phenomenal young man, respectful, and comes to training every day to put his best foot forward and work hard at wanting to improve.

“We are excited about what the future holds for Harry. A dynamic player, who has versatility, and I believe it is a huge feather in the club’s cap to retain the services of someone of his quality.

“The onus is on him to continue to apply himself the way he has, and what I see day in and day out at training, Harry’s showing me that he wants to be part of this team. As a young player, you must earn those opportunities and when you get your chance you have to take them. Harry’s doing that, in some big games against tough opponents too.”
