Salford Red Devils boss Paul Rowley was proud of his side for having a go in what he described as an ‘ugly game’.
Salford went down 22-14 to Castleford Tigers but put up a valiant effort, considering their week.
Head coach Rowley admitted they hadn’t trained or really prepared much for this match but was happy that they stayed in the fight.
Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, he said: “I thought they had a dig for us, I thought it was an ugly game, it wasn’t pleasing on the eye although it was close.
“We got some excitement in there but I’m grateful and thankful that the lads had a dig for us and for each other. Obviously, it’s disappointing though.”
When asked about their preparation for the game, the Salford Red Devils boss admitted they hadn’t prepared much at all.
He added: “Well, we put a squad of 17 out so it was quite easy to prepare to play against us if I’m being honest.
“Obviously we didn’t train, we had a team run yesterday, and you could see with Sneydy cramping up at the end there.
“It’s difficult but I’m right behind the lads all the way, they know that and we’re a tight group. We’ve been stretched and tested, that’s for sure.
“Fair play to Castleford, they had enough in the end, the bench made a good impact for them and they did a good job.
“We’re disappointed with some of the tries we conceded and so it got away from us in the end.”
Salford next host Bradford Bulls in the Challenge Cup before playing Huddersfield Giants at home too.
Paul Rowley is optimistic that if they can stick together as a group, they can get through anything.
He finished: “I think it’ll take a little bit of fixing to be fair, you don’t go along on an emotional rollercoaster and just flip the switch overnight but that’ll be our intention.
“We wanted to come through after this weekend and next week’s a new week so we’ll go about that as staff and as a group and start having a look at what the future looks like for us as a group.
“It’s about how we repair it, how we come through it intact and are we together or are we not?
“We’ll work that out next week but I’m very proud of them.”
