Paul Rowley has assessed his side’s 40-10 victory over Bradford Bulls, claiming that it was a fantastic effort from every player.
Tries from Jacob Douglas, Curtis Sironen, Joe Shorrocks, Jackson Hastings and two from Jack Welsby helped them to the win, with the latter two in particular having stand-out games.
Saints led 12-10 at half-time, but a much more controlled and ruthless second half allowed them to pull away from the Bulls and claim their 11th win of the season.
“I enjoyed that one,” he said post-match to Sky Sports. “I thought there were some steps forward on how we want to look. We won’t get overly carried away with any of that, but I think we’ve been chipping away week to week.
“We’ve been playing tough week to week as well against some good opposition, not always coming out on the right side of the result but today I thought we were good both sides of the ball and I thought after weathering a really tough spell, a man down and some calls going against in that first half, I thought we had to dig deep, weather that storm and then we reacted brilliantly in that second half.
Revealing what the half-time message looked like, when the game was fully in the balance, he said: “Oh, it’s really simple.
“Everything’s always really simple. Just some key things that we want to work on defensively and in offence as well. Like I said before, keep the game simple, but I thought we were all right in the first half. It was the penalties and our discipline that were letting us down.
“Needless ones, should I say, and I thought we had a couple of harsh calls actually off the video ref as well, but we were masters of our own downfall in some respect with the penalties.
“We let Bradford out of yardage pretty cheap and that takes its toll in any game. But, we completed high, we defended well, did the fundamentals well and we got to have some fun and look pretty on the back of it as well.
Rowley admitted that today was probably Welsby’s best game of the season, with George Delaney and Alex Walmsley also being singled out by the boss for praise.
