Parramatta Eels playmaker set to make move to Super League

Daejarn Asi Super League

Parramatta Eels’ young half-back Daejarn Asi will ‘make a move’ to Super League for 2025 according to reports down under.

That is according to The Daily Telegraph where it has been reported that the 24-year-old will make the switch ahead of the upcoming season despite being a starter for the Eels for much of the season.

Asi has started in the last four games for Parramatta and has made 11 appearances across the season with only two of those coming from the bench.

The two-time Samoan international had signed for the Eels ahead of the 2023 season in which he made ten appearances under current Leeds Rhinos head coach Brad Arthur.

However, with the Eels struggling, injuries to stars such as Mitchell Moses and a new coach in place, Asi has found more playing time this season but he’s still reported to be making a move to Super League for the 2025 campaign.

Daejarn Asi started his NRL career with the North Queensland Cowboys, debuting in the 2020 season as he scored a try in a defeat to Penrith Panthers.

Playing alongside him in the halves that day was former Hull FC man Jake Clifford who looks set to sign a contract extension with the Cowboys after returning to his boyhood club following his one season in Super League.

It now appears Asi will take the same path as Clifford and make the switch to Super League with The Telegraph reporting that is “expected”. They also note that Regan Campbell-Gillard and Maika Sivo have been given permission to leave, despite being under contract.

Sivo has been linked with a move to Super League earlier in the campaign when it became known that he would be made available and the Fijian winger will certainly attract Super League interest.

As for Asi, he would then move back to his native New Zealand and feature for the Warriors in the 2022 season after two years struggling for first-team action at North Queensland, before moving to his current club Parramatta in 2023.

Interestingly, he is of English descent but having never lived in England or played the sport as a junior, he would not be exempt to the overseas quota meaning whichever Super League side does move for him will require an open spot.

One such team who could move for him is Hull FC, as they did with his former teammate Jake Clifford, after seemingly missing out on Lachlan Lam.
