Papua New Guinean full-back reveals Super League approach

A Papua New Guinean full-back has claimed that a Super League team approached to sign him ahead of the 2025 season.

PNG Hunters playmaker Morea Morea has spoken to the media back home in Papua New Guinea to reveal that a Super League side was interested in his talents but that the chase had cooled off.

Morea came off the bench to score against the Cook Islands in November during the Pacific Championships in a game that Super League star Nene Macdonald bagged a brace, with Leigh’s Lachlan Lam and Castleford’s Sylvester Namo both also getting on the scoresheet.

His international call up came following an impressive season in the Queensland Cup with PNG Hunters who made it to the semi-finals, something that the 23-year-old has vowed to improve upon in 2025.

There had been a chance that he would not be playing in the Q Cup in 2025 given the Super League interest, however, he explained that had cooled off.

Speaking to Papua New Guinean outlet The National, Morea revealed: “Yeah, there was one club in the Super League competition showing a bit of interest in me.

“They approached me after the completion of the Pacific Bowl Championship last year but it’s not yet official and I think there is nothing at the moment regarding their interest.

“But let’s see how it goes.”

Obviously any Super League side who tried to sign Morea would need to have an overseas quota spot open, something that very few teams have which potentially explained why any move stalled.

Morea has already turned his attention back to the Q Cup, stating: “For now my focus is on the Hunters. My aim this year is I want to get back to my form and go one step ahead than last year.

“We finished in the semi-final last year and I will have to work hard this year to help the team win the comp.”
