Overseas utility man re-signs for Super League club in major 2026 boost

York Knights

York Knights have re-signed utility player Nikau Williams as they prepare for the start of their first season in Super League.

Williams spent the 2024 season with York and he caught the eye with 10 tries coming in 26 appearances before he moved back down under at the end of that season. However, he has now returned to the club on a full-time deal with just a month to go before the start of the campaign.

The New Zealander played at full-back, centre and in the halves during his first spell at the club and his return gives York head coach Mark Applegarth cover in a number of positions.

Williams spent four seasons in the Championship during his first spell in England after joining Whitehaven in 2021. He made 55 appearances for the Cumbria outfit before moving across to Newcastle Thunder in 2023, where he featured 25 times.

And, he will now be stepping up to the Super League for the first time after returning to the LNER Community Stadium.

York Knights land Williams

“He’s a player I’ve been chasing ever since he had to go back to Australia,” Applegarth said on his 14th signing of the off-season.

“We didn’t want him to leave in the first place and we’re delighted we’ve got him back.

“He picked up exactly where he left off and he’s just slotted straight back in. I think he’s going to be a massive part of the squad this year and I’m delighted we’ve got him back on board.”

On returning to York Knights, Williams said: “I’m really happy be back. Clint got in touch gave me the opportunity to come back and I was buzzing and took it with both hands.

“I’m really enjoying being back. It’s like I never left to be honest.”
