OPINION: Why there is no need to panic at Saints

It may not have been the start to the season some expected, but there is absolutely no need to panic yet if you are a Saints fan.

So far, they have lost three of their first six games. They have lost as many games now as they did in the whole of last season.

Regardless of having a new coach, it was always going to be very diffcult to replicate what happened in 2019.

What a lot of people fail to remember sometimes is when you employ a new coach, he has to get his style across to them.

That style is different to what Justin Holbrook brought to the table. Every new Head Coach that comes in wants to exert their style on the club.

If you watch Tonga, Kristian Woolf’s other team, you will see they play a style which is predominately through the middle, and the big forwards get through a lot of the work.

In my opinion, in Alex Walmsley and Luke Thompson, Saints do have the forwards to play this way, but other elements need to be considered.

Saints have one of the best back-lines in the competition. When fully fit, expect Lachlan Coote, Tommy Makinson, Kevin Naiqama, Mark Percival and Regan Grace to all have their says.

Last year’s champions have threats all over the pitch, and if you can get all of them singing from the same hymn sheet, then they will be a formidable force once again.

It is diffcult at the moment. Coote was out for a number of matches, and Percival is facing months out after shoulder surgery. But once he comes back, I fully expect Saints to get back to their best.
