One off contract player Wigan Warriors should try and sign

Though the 2023 Super League season has yet to begin, preparations for beyond that will have already begun especially as most sides have already done all their business for the 2023 barring the likes of Catalans Dragons, Leigh Leopards and potentially Salford Red Devils.

As in the NRL, considerations will be made to how squads for the 2024 season will look especially after they set the precedent down under of making signings well in advance because of the 1st November rule.

All sides have players off contract at the end of 2023 all of whom could feasible move away in 2024 though in general their current clubs have first dibs.

That doesn’t stop teams from trying to sign them however as we always see plenty of movement confirmed well in advance of a new season.

But which off contract player should Wigan Warriors be targeting?

It is pretty clear what area Wigan should be focused on and that is the backrow. The Warriors have lost John Bateman to Wests Tigers and at the end of the season Kai Pearce-Paul will also make the move to the NRL with Newcastle Knights.

They have also lost James McDonnell to Leeds Rhinos as well, thus a backrower is a must.

They could move for Salford Red Devils star Kallum Watkins who has transitioned perfectly into a backrow. However, perhaps a better target would be Bradford Bulls star AJ Wallace.

Hull FC and Castleford Tigers have both missed out on his signature but at the end of 2023 his contract at Odsal is up allowing him to leave for free should he wish.

Therefore, he is the player Wigan should consider trying to sign for 2024.
