One off contract player Warrington Wolves should try and sign

Though the 2023 Super League season has yet to begin, preparations for beyond that will have already begun especially as most sides have already done all their business for the 2023 barring the likes of Catalans Dragons, Leigh Leopards and potentially Salford Red Devils.

As in the NRL, considerations will be made to how squads for the 2024 season will look especially after they set the precedent down under of making signings well in advance because of the 1st November rule.

All sides have players off contract at the end of 2023 all of whom could feasible move away in 2024 though in general their current clubs have first dibs.

That doesn’t stop teams from trying to sign them however as we always see plenty of movement confirmed well in advance of a new season.

But which off contract player should Warrington Wolves be targeting?

Peter Mata’utia has the number three shirt at Warrington at present but is coming off contract at the end of 2023 meanwhile Stefan Ratchford has the number four in what may not be his best position.

Meanwhile, at 34 he is at the end of his career meanwhile it looks that Toby King’s career at Warrington is over after joining Wigan Warriors on loan.

There are a number of centres in the final 12 months of their deals including Sam Wood from Hull KR, Joey Leilua at Featherstone Rovers who recently turned down a move to Catalans Dragons, Dean Cross of Salford Red Devils and indeed former Leeds Rhinos star Konrad Hurrell at St Helens who isn’t guaranteed rugby at St Helens with Will Hopoate holding onto the number three shirt.

Deon Cross might be the best option of the lot. He was exceptional at Salford Red Devils in his first season and has huge potential. Alongside Connor Wrench at Warrington, the Wolves could have two exciting centres if they were able to tempt him away from the Red Devils.
