One off contract player Catalans Dragons should try and sign

Though the 2023 Super League season has yet to begin, preparations for beyond that will have already begun especially as most sides have already done all their business for the 2023 barring the likes of Catalans Dragons, Leigh Leopards and potentially Salford Red Devils.

As in the NRL, considerations will be made to how squads for the 2024 season will look especially after they set the precedent down under of making signings well in advance because of the 1st November rule.

All sides have players off contract at the end of 2023 all of whom could feasible move away in 2024 though in general their current clubs have first dibs.

That doesn’t stop teams from trying to sign them however as we always see plenty of movement confirmed well in advance of a new season.

But which off contract player should Catalans Dragons be targeting?

The longer things go on for the Dragons in terms of their chase for a new centre having looked to sign Featherstone Rovers man Joey Leilua only to be denied, the more likely it is that they will start the season without one with reports from Rugby League Live suggesting that Tom Johnstone could play there in 2023.

However, Johnstone would be wasted at centre so long term they need to be looking for a centre and there are a few coming off contract in Super League including Super League Champion and Grand Final try scorer Konrad Hurrell.

He would be a great signing for the Dragons and would fit their star-studded squad to a tee.

Except for a difficult spell in 2021, he has always been one of Super League’s top centres.
