“One of the best refereeing performances I’ve seen” – How social media reacted to Leeds’ win over St Helens

We might already have a game of the season contender after last night’s clash between St Helens and Leeds Rhinos.

It was the Saints homecoming after winning the World Club Challenge and they led 24-12 but some key decisions then went against them such as no punishment for Sam Walters after a tackle many believed was a shoulder charge.

Then Konrad Hurrell was sent off for contact with the head and a Blake Austin drop goal settled the contest.

It left Australian commentator Andrew Voss dead impressed especially as he pointed out that both the NRL and Super League Champions were beaten this week:

Leeds legend Keith Senior meanwhile said it was a shame that the game was spoilt by “the decisions at the end.”

Meanwhile, former Super League official Richard Silverwood said he felt Sam Walters should have been punished for the shoulder charge.

Meanwhile the win had NRL journalist Brad Walter describing Rohan Smith as a future NRL coach not just because of the result but because of the way he dealt with the St Helens fans who came to the touchline to seemingly give him a piece of their mind.

Gareth Walker meanwhile felt it was the perfect advert for the game as “an absolutely gripping contest.”

This was echoed by others who said the product is what we need to promote.

One fan joked that Sam Walters should have been awarded Man of the Match after it was his suspect tackle that rattled the Saints and likely sparked the boos at the end.

Many fans are questioning these decisions but one said he was pleased with the officiating both last night and on Thursday. They also said that Saints fans were embarrassing themselves.

One St Helens local said he felt they were “robbed” but slammed those who let the town down.

One fan joked that it meant that Catalans Dragons are now the best side in the world.

Meanwhile, pundit Jon Wells was praised for his segment at the end of the Sky Sports coverage.

Meanwhile, one supporter likened the win to the days of Sinfield.

Of course plenty of fans were rubbing it in that they’d beaten the World Champions.

“The most Rhinos thing to ever happen” was perhaps the best way to describe the win.

Rohan Smith came in for more praise for the way he dealt with the angry Saints fans at the end of the game.

Aidan Sezer, Sam Walters and James McDonnell all impressed one fan.

Saints fans had a different view referencing the shoulder charge.

To be fair to Saints fans, many pointed the finger at their side’s poor discipline but still pointed at some of the decisions.

No excuses was the view of one fan.

One Saints fan joked that it was Leeds’ Grand Final.

That said, Saints fans were called out for a lack of class by some supporters.

One fan bucked the trend and claimed it was “one of the best refereeing performance.”

Others said it was one of the best games they had seen.

A great game overshadowed by one decision was the view of one viewer.

But lets end on a positive.

Fans were describing it as “an absolute corker.”
