Most of the big off season stories have been and gone ahead of the 2023 Super League season.
But here is one major announcement every Super League club could still make.
Castleford Tigers: Squad Numbers
Castleford Tigers are one of the few remaining sides yet to announce their squad numbers for the new season. It will be interesting to see if new signings Jacob Miller from Wakefield Trinity and Gareth Widdop from Warrington Wolves will take six and seven ahead of Danny Richardson.
Catalans Dragons: Two Signings
The Dragons are said to be eyeing up two signings ahead of 2023. They want a new prop having let Dylan Napa leave and missing out on former Warrington Wolves and Salford Red Devils prop Ben Murdoch-Masila. They also want a centre after letting Samisoni Langi and Dean Whare leave. They missed out on Featherstone Rovers’ Joey Leilua.
Huddersfield Giants: Jake Connor Position
This will be less of announcement and more likely to be revealed in pre-season friendlies, but Jake Connor’s position, despite taking on the number one shirt, won’t necessarily play fullback after Ian Watson said Tui Lolohea is still his first choice fullback.
Hull FC: New Captain
Following the departure of Luke Gale, Hull FC require a new skipper. It will be interesting to see what direction Tony Smith goes when appointing a new captain.
Hull KR: Further Off Field News
Hull KR have put greater focus on their off-field plans ahead of 2023. They have revealed plans to redevelop part of Craven Park and have put together a new Board of Directors. Thus, we could see more of this news before the new season.
Leeds Rhinos: Decision on Skipper
When Rohan Smith spoke after the Boxing Day friendly against Wakefield Trinity, he revealed that a decision on whether Kruise Leeming would keep the captaincy in 2023 would not come imminently. Though it will have to come before the new season.
Leigh Leopards: Two New Signings
Owner Derek Beaumont revealed that “the plan” is for Leigh to make further signings ahead of 2023. After his flurry of 10 signings at the launch, he revealed his intention to help Chris Chester find a middle and following the departure of Blake Ferguson, they could do with a winger and it could come in the shape of Umyla Hanley.
Salford Red Devils: New Signing
After the departure of Sitaleki Akauola, Salford have a quota spot to use and another signing ahead of the new season would be a great boost as Salford look to kick on.
St Helens: That Joe Batchelor won’t be going anywhere
As the Champions of Super League, unsurprisingly they have perhaps the most stability in Super League. That said, there has been a report from Australia linking Joe Batchelor to the NRL. However, it seems Batchelor will stay at St Helens in the new year. Whether there is an official announcement is unclear. Actions speak louder than words after all.
Wakefield Trinity: Further Stadium Updates
Wakefield, especially chairman John Minards, should be commended with keeping fans up to date with the stadium redevelopment. Expect to see the further steps made with the goal being for things to be mostly complete by summer.
Warrington Wolves: Confirming a New Captain
Wolves skipper Jack Hughes headed for Leigh Leopards in 2023 so the club need to appoint an official new captain for the new season. It could be the likes of Stefan Ratchford or George Williams.
Wigan Warriors: John Bateman’s replacement
Though Morgan Smithies has replaced Bateman as the number 13, it remains to be seen who will replace him in the backrow. Will it be Willie Isa or Kai Pearce-Paul in 2023? When their first team of the new year is announced, we will know.
