One club man granted testimonial entering his 12th season

Testimonials are one of the heart-warming and community built aspects of rugby league, with the sport recognising a player who has dedicated his life to the game and that testimonial reward being an opportunity for the player to raise awareness and give back to causes dear to them.

The latest of those players to have been awarded a testimonial is Barrow Raiders’ Dan Toal who is entering his 12th season with the Cumbrian side.

Having signed in 2012 Toal has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the Championship club and tallied 64 tries during that time which is a handy return for a forward.

Currently recovering from knee surgery Toal will feature near the business end of the season as the Raiders look to try and improve on their fifth placed finish in 2022.

Throughout the year further events and announcement’s will be made regarding Toal’s testimonial but he has already commented on, speaking to his club’s site about the honour.

“It felt good to find out about the testimonial,” he said. “When I first signed back in 2012, I never imagined that I would get this recognition.

“I’m obviously gutted that I’m going to be out injured for the majority of the season, especially with it being my testimonial year. I’m 10 weeks post-operation now and it’s been really tough.

“Progress has been very slow, but I’ll be working hard to get back on the pitch and hopefully I’ll have a big impact near the back end of the season.”

Barrow Raiders chairman Steve Neale said: “I am delighted that Dan has been awarded a testimonial by the RFL.

“Since my time at the club he has only ever expressed a wish to continue with his only club and he has been a model of consistency for the whole decade that he has been with us.

“He is very strong and aggressive but also has great footwork and runs some great lines that can often undo defences.

“He has been a tremendous servant for us, and I hope that the supporters can get behind his fundraising committee and support all the events that will be lined up.”
