Oliver Roberts leaves Huddersfield Giants for new club

With May 1 now gone, those players out of contract at the end of 2022 are able to negotiate with other clubs in an attempt to secure their futures.

A whole host of players have departed clubs or have planned to depart clubs such as Mike Cooper at Warrington Wolves and Tom Johnstone at Wakefield Trinity.

Another one can be added to the list tonight with Huddersfield Giants announcing that they are releasing back-row forward Oliver Roberts as he gets set to make a Championship move.

The 27-year-old had only made three starts in 2022 and with his contract expiring at the end of the season asked for an early release which has been granted.

His career with the Giants encompassed 97 games over a five-year period in two spells having joined from the Bradford Bulls in 2015.

Huddersfield released a short statement to thank Roberts for his efforts at the John Smith’s Stadium: “The club would like to wish Oliver every success in the future and thank him for his efforts in the Claret & Gold.”

It has not yet been revealed where Roberts’ future lies in the second tier, but he has spent time on loan and on dual registration with the Halifax Panthers.

Aged 27, Roberts has also spent time on loan at the Salford Red Devils, Oldham and the Sheffield Eagles, whilst the prop has earned nine caps internationally for Ireland.

He will, of course, be wanting to hit good form and game time ahead of the impending World Cup at the end of the year.
