South Sydney Rabbitohs winger Jacob Gagai looks set for Super League after being released by the NRL club. That’s according to The Mole, who claims Huddersfield Giants are in the frame for the Australian ahead of the the 2025 season.
Gagai, who turns 29 in December, only made his debut for Souths in March, but he went on to make 17 appearances for the club this season. He certainly made his mark, with nine tries coming along the way, but unfortunately that wasn’t enough for the Bunnies to deem him worthy of a new deal for the 2025 season.
As such, the outside back has been on the lookout for a new club and he seems to have found one in the shape of Huddersfield. The report claims the deal will be announced in the ‘coming days’, in what will come as a big boost for Luke Robinson’s side.
Huddersfield already have Adam Swift, Jake Bibby and Sam Halsall who can play on the wing, but the decision to allow Jake Connor to leave the club appears to have freed up the funds required to provide enough more outside back competition.
Gagai, who is the brother of Newcastle Knights’ Dane Gagai, may have only made the step up to the NRL this year, but he has heaps of experience playing in the New South Wales Cup with the second strings of Newcastle and Souths. He’s made 85 appearances in the NSW Cup and scored 33 tries.
Speaking to World Wide of Sports, the player’s manager Gavin Orr said: “Jacob was a late bloomer and had a great season. In the end, his age probably counted against him.
“Souths would have liked to keep him but had other priorities. But an opportunity has come up in Super League and it looks like he will be taking it.”
