NRL threaten Sam Burgess with defamation lawsuit

Sam Burgess has refused to back down despite NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg threatening the England star with a lawsuit and $25,000 fine.

It relates to comments from the South Sydney captain on Tuesday labelling the NRL judiciary a “kangaroo court”, resulting in a phone call from Greenberg earlier today.

Fox Sports are reporting that the NRL CEO explained to Burgess that the term “kangaroo court” was defamatory towards Geoff Bellew, a supreme court judge who serves as the NRL judiciary chairman.

Greenberg then told Sam to issue a public apology or he could face a defamation lawsuit and a potential $25,000 fine for breaching the players’ code of conduct.

But it seems Slammin’ Sam will not be carrying out Greenberg’s orders with his reported reply short and sweet – “no chance!”

The next twist in this ongoing saga remains to be seen, with Sam of the belief that NRL players should be allowed to express their honest opinion.

And he’s likely to get support from his peers on that too, having already received plenty of backing for his opinions regarding the NRL judiciary.
