NRL star reveals he had a training session fight with former Leeds Rhinos man

St George Illawarra Dragons have been making the headlines this week after a training sessions scrap between Zac Lomax and Junior Amone which came as fans were allowed to watch the session.

On this veteran player Jack De Belin said to the Daily Telegraph: “I was on the sidelines chatting away and missed it all, but I ran in and broke it up. It’s like a game of footy, things happen, there are distractions, but you get on with the job.

“I’ve seen it (run-ins) happen on numerous occasions, and it’s not out of the ordinary. When you’ve got boys competing hard, especially when it’s an opposed session, you’ve got guys who might go harder than others.

“We’re all passionate, we’re all good teammates, so if anything it’s a good thing.”

After this, De Belin recalled a similar training fight with then Dragons teammate Trent Merrin who showed his never give an inch mentality when he starred for Leeds Rhinos even taking on their captaincy.

He said: “It was a similar thing, I had an AC sprain, I got put on it, I grabbed him by the throat, but it was just heat of the moment. You have a laugh about it afterwards,” he said.

This mentality is why Merrin was a success at Leeds, it’s a pity he left after one year.
