NRL star requests release to join Super League club

Mitchell Pearce will request a release from his Newcastle Knights contract in a bid to join the Catalans Dragons in Super League.

The 33-year-old still has a year left on his current contract, but News Corp is reporting that a three-year deal is close to being done which would make Pearce 36 by the time it expires.

Pearce had originally signed a one-year extension with the Knights during the 2021 season, but the veteran playmaker has been suffering with a serious pectoral injury which kept him out for over ten weeks.

With Catalans Dragons’ James Maloney taking a deal at fellow French side FC Lezignan at the end of the season just gone, the rumour mill has been in overdrive over who Steve McNamara could bring in to replace the Australian architect.

And, Pearce apparently heads that list.

NRL legend Andrew Johns backed Pearce’s move to France when the possible transfer was first mooted this year.

“I think that‘d be a great opportunity for him,“ Johns told Channel 9.

“South of France, anonymous, weekends off, fly into wherever – it takes you half an hour to an hour to fly all over Europe.

“Less eyes on him, faster, more open game. I think if he decides to go, I think Catalans would be a great fit for him.”
