NRL star Jason Taumalolo ‘rejects’ surprise Super League club

Taumalolo was linked with a Super League move

According to reports, North Queensland Cowboys star Jason Taumalolo has rejected the approach of one Super League club after an ambitious attempt was made to lure him from his lucrative contract.

Back in 2017, Taumalolo made history as he penned a ten-year deal tying him to the Cowboys until the end of the 2027 season. That came off the back of his 2016 Dally M Medal-winning campaign with the forward arguably the best in the world.

Now aged 31, his powers are declining but he still remains one of Rugby League’s most iconic names and it’s being reported that a Super League side tried to sway him and bring him over.

That’s per The Australian who have revealed that whilst the Cowboys could be interested in allowing the forward to leave, Taumalolo has rejected a Super League approach.

It was revealed that the side in question are the Catalans Dragons who have been making big moves for NRL players of late, most recently adding Tevita Pangai Jr to their ranks for the 2025 season after already snapping up Luke Keary, Nick Cotric and Reimis Smith.

Chris Orr, Taumalolo’s agent, said: “There was some interest in Jase. He had some options to go to the English Super League or Japanese rugby and we had some preliminary talks with a number of clubs.

“But Jason wants to stay loyal to the Cowboys. We had a meeting with the Cowboys recently and there are no issues there at all. Jase loves the club.

“He has captained the side and he has set himself a goal to finish his career as a one-club legend who hopefully becomes the first player to reach 300 games for the Cowboys.”

Taumalolo would have potentially been the highest-profile Super League signing of all time and despite the decline in his form, at age 31 he could have been one of the most destructive forwards the competition had ever seen.
