NRL side “hold discussions” with Super League clubs over signings

NRL and Super League rugby league

NRL side Gold Coast Titans have reportedly sent scouts to look at Super League talent this month.

Reportedly, the side had scouts at Magic Weekend, and have been in contact with Super League club representatives regarding future transfer opportunities.

That’s according to Examiner Live, who have suggested they are looking for English props as a number one priority.

Super League sides are often unable to compete with their NRL counterparts.

It seems, however, that the league‘s quota rules will have a big shake-up for 2026, which could affect this.

Currently, clubs can have a maximum of seven ‘non-Federation trained players’ in their squad – and these players are defined as those that didn’t play three seasons of rugby in Europe before they turned 21..

Now, this rule seems set to be relaxed further, as Super League looks to compete with NRL.

According to Yorkshire Live, the new rule changes set to come into effect in 2026 will see quota players become exempt if/once they have spent six consecutive years as a Super League player.

As well as this meaning clubs will be able to have more foreign players if they play their cards right, it also means there could be more players on higher wages: the salary cap for ‘home’ players is £100,000 per year, while non-Federation trained players can earn up to £150,000.

Therefore, we may start to see sides more able to hold on to players.

However, for now, it seems we may soon see a top English pro lining up for Gold Coast Titans.
