NRL halfback who was linked with Hull FC signs stunning deal

Hull FC have been active in the transfer market in recent weeks and months.

Head coach Brett Hodgson has brought in the likes of Will Smith and Jack Walker – before his heartbreaking injury – for the rest of 2022 whilst Tex Hoy, Jake Trueman and Liam Sutcliffe will make the move to the MKM Stadium for 2023.

But, whilst the Black and Whites were searching for a halfback, one name popped up and that was South Sydney Rabbitohs playmaker Dean Hawkins.

Hawkins, who has made just four NRL appearances since debuting for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2021 – was linked with a move to Hull, but Hodgson went instead for Hoy at the Newcastle Knights.

The 23-year-old has made the most of limited opportunities so far but has been a key figure for the Rabbitohs’ side in the NSW Cup after winning the competition’s ‘Player of the Year’ award in 2021.

And, now Hawkins has signed an extension to his deal which means the halfback will stay at Souths until the end of 2023.

“Dean has been a great servant to the club over a number of years, progressing from the junior Bunnies right up to first grade,” the Rabbitohs’ Head of Football Mark Ellison told club media.

“He’s a South Sydney junior who loves the club and we’re looking forward to working with him again next season.”

For the Rabbitohs, the halfback partnership between Lachlan Ilias and Cody Walker has improved no end in recent weeks after a difficult start to the 2022 NRL season.

With skipper Adam Reynolds moving on to Brisbane Broncos, it was always going to be tough for the Rabbitohs to replicate that kind of performer, but new head coach Jason Demetriou seems to have found a winning combination.

Though Souths went down to reigning premiers Penrith Panthers yesterday, they pushed the Blue Mountains side all the way only to go down by four points.
