NRL halfback still available to Super League ahead of 2024

NRL star Anthony Milford is available to Super League clubs now that he is out of contract.

Milford, a former Brisbane Broncos star and a halfback who featured in the Rugby League World Cup Final last year, is out of contract at the end of 2024 and is now available to talk to Super League clubs from November 1st.

The halfback though could be released from the final year of his deal to make the switch to the Betfred Super League. There was initial interest from the Leigh Leopards after they missed out on the arrival of Brodie Croft after he left Salford Red Devils to the Leeds Rhinos.

This trail went cold but Milford is still available and Leigh could still make a second move for the halfback.

Meanwhile, Channel 9 reporter Ben Dobbin has further underlined the likelihood of an immediate departure with a move to Super League likely.

“You always wonder what goes on at end-of-season reviews, and you never really hear it, but if you join the dots you work it out,” Dobbin told Triple M radio.

“Before the season was finished Anthony Milford was offered a three-year deal to go to the Super League as a marquee player.

“That would make sense, at the back end of his career, would he go overseas? He said no, he didn’t want to leave his family.

“The end-of-season review (at the Dolphins) happened and surprise surprise, Anthony Milford is now looking overseas.

“Which says to me Wayne Bennett said to him, ‘hey mate, you’re not playing first grade here next year’.

“The Dolphins are saying he’s still contracted for 2024 – when they start saying that you know they’ve given him the green light (to leave).”

The other club likely interested in the halfback is Catalans Dragons. They have lost almost their entire spine with Sam Tomkins and Mitchell Pearce retiring and Tyrone May joining Hull KR.

Arthur Mourgue will replace Tomkins at fullback and Theo Fages has been signed from Huddersfield Giants to play at seven but a new number six is needed to replace May after his move to Craven Park.
