The Canberra Raiders are in the market for some big signings including in the halfback market and they could turn to Super League.

The Raiders, like no other NRL team, have had success when it comes to signing British players in recent years. They drafted in former Hull KR hooker Josh Hodgson and former Catalans Dragons second-row Elliott Whitehead to get the ball rolling.

Since then they have made some big moves from Wigan Warriors including John Bateman, Ryan Sutton and George Williams.

Their most recent acquisition was the signing of Morgan Smithies from Wigan Warriors as well. They also tried to sign Super League star and Leigh Leopards halfback Lachlan Lam.

Serious About Rugby League understands they are considering looking at Super League for major signings for 2025.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, their coach Ricky Stuart had his say on recruitment: “We are definitely transitioning into a new era, I am excited about the opportunities that this will present. We have recruited some of the best junior players across the country and in conjunction with my coaching staff we have the opportunity and time to develop these young men into the next group of Raiders.”

Asked about the decision to not sign an experienced half ahead of 2024, he said: “Yes, it was a conscious decision. In saying this though it is hard to buy a marquee player in a certain position if he is not there to buy. Some of the youth we have competing for NRL spots may be six-to-12 months early but you have to balance trust and also understand that if you buy over top of them you might lose one of them. Every young player thinks he is ready, I always ask my young players to trust me in knowing when I think he is ready to not only handle NRL but play well. We are a development club that provides opportunities for young players that want to work hard.”

Lastly he addressed the salary cap: “I can’t answer this honestly mate. What I can say is that my relationship with a lot of the boys is more than just their coach. Jack, Mon and the children are happy, which is enough for me.”
