NRL clubs should be monitoring Lachlan Lam’s situation at Leigh Leopards closely over the next few months. That’s according to Gold Coast Titans man Jacob Alick-Wiencke, who represents Papua New Guinea alongside Lam.
The half-back is one of several key men entering the final year of their contract with the Leopards and it seems interest in him might not be too far away. Lam was heavily linked with a move away from the Leigh Sports Village last season, with Super League clubs said to have fallen short in moves for the 26-year-old.
Speaking to Serious About RL, head of rugby Chris Chester gave an update on Leigh’s retention situation this week and while he didn’t mention Lam specifically, he did say discussions were ongoing with those players off-contract this year.
However, Alick-Wiencke would love to see the former Sydney Roosters man make a return to the NRL and he believes his international teammate should be of interest to clubs Down Under.
“I think he’s probably one of the classiest players in the world at the moment,” Alick-Wiencke told Zero Tackle.
“Probably a bit biased in that sense but I love Lammy. He’s a great fella off the field and absolutely killing it on the field.
“I think any NRL club would be lucky to have him and he’s just in that sort of sweet spot so any NRL club should be on the lookout for him.”
Lam has been with Leigh since July 2022, joining the club to play under his father Adrian Lam after leaving the Roosters. Since then he has made 71 appearances for the club, with the highlight undoubtedly being the Challenge Cup win at Wembley Stadium in 2023. He kicked the winning drop goal that day which saw him claim the Lance Todd Trophy.
Edwin Ipape, Josh Charnley, Gareth O’Brien and Jack Hughes are among the other players in the final year of their respective deals.
