NRL clubs could be about to raid Super League after salary cap changes

Salary cap exemptions in the NRL could be about to open the door for them to chase more English stars.

Peter V’Landys has said the NRL are looking to bring in exemptions in the cap which will incentivise bringing in players from rugby union but also from other countries which could mean bringing in English player could be favourable for NRL clubs.

“We have been looking at bringing in salary cap exemptions for players from other countries for some time,” V’landys said to Stuff.

“It was about bringing in players from  other nations. It would also apply to players from other sports. And, yes, other sports includes rugby.

“If a Wallaby or an All Black wanted to come over, we’d look at cap exemptions for sure. We have been looking at this for quite a while, and it’s a good time to revisit this. It’s something I’d like to see come in and come in now.”

This would only increase interest in the likes of Jack Welsby and Lewis Dodd from St Helens as NRL clubs remain interested in the two players who masterminded the defeat of Penrith Panthers in the World Club Challenge.

Super League seems to be doing its best to thwart this though by considering increasing the number of marquee players at clubs from two to three under the proviso one must be British.
