NRL club reportedly close to signing Wigan Warriors star Bevan French

One of the big talking points in Super League is whether Bevan French will remain at Wigan Warriors.

Though he’s the league’s leading try scorer, French has spent the year not in his favoured fullback position after Jai Field cemented himself there early in the season.

The two have combined brilliantly all season with 40 tries between them many of which they combined to create such as at the Magic Weekend or indeed in the Challenge Cup Final as Wigan secured a 20th Challenge Cup with Field and French playing a key role in their victory over Huddersfield Giants.

Field subsequently signed a long term deal with the Warriors as he enjoys the form of his life, but French is a more complex situation with him playing on the wing instead of at fullback to get the best out of Field.

He’s also older and would take up more salary cap as well as another quota spot though it’s believed Wigan were willing to move heaven and earth to keep him at the DW Stadium.

For weeks French has said he’s “close” to sorting out his future with many including Sky Sports pundits Jon Wells and Brian Carney speculating that he’d stay at Wigan.

Though reports down under now suggest to the contrary with the Daily Telegraph reporting that Newcastle Knights are “closing in on” the winger whilst the likes of ABC Grandstand have echoed these claims with rumours of a three year deal surfacing.

French would be a fine addition to the Knights especially on the back of his record breaking seven tries in one game against Hull FC recently. Though he’d again likely have to play second fiddle to Kayln Ponga who snubbed the Dolphins recently.

Interestingly, it could be a great bargaining chip for the Knights to bring in fellow Wigan star Kai Pearce-Paul.

The second-rower is said to have signed for 2024 but the Knights are keen on bringing him in early.
