A club from the NRL has enquired about the availability of St Helens playmaker Moses Mbye. That’s according to the Daily Telegraph, with an unnamed club said to have ‘quietly asked’ about taking Mbye back Down Under after one and half seasons in Super League.
The report is included in the publication’s regular Saint, Sinner, Shoosh feature, which includes news from around the game while also carrying whispers and rumours from around the sport. The Mbye line is one of those whispers and while it does specify the club as Sydney based, the report stops short of offering any more information.
Mbye joined the Saints from St George Illawarra Dragons in July 2023 on a two-and-a-half year deal and as a result he still has one more year left to run on his contract at the Totally Wicked Stadium. As such, St Helens would be within their rights to demand a transfer fee if any approach were to be made.
The 31-year-old is well known Down Under, of course, having made three appearances for Queensland in the State of Origin, while also featuring for Canterbury Bulldogs, Wests Tigers and the Dragons, making close to 200 NRL outings along the way.
However, he has been a key man under Paul Wellens since his arrival in Merseyside and is expected to play an important role next season, too, in what is something of a new look spine following the addition of Tristan Sailor.
He made 11 appearances in his first few months with the Saints before featuring 25 times in a number of positions last time around, with run outs coming at hooker, in the halves and even at loose-forward. In what was a tough season for St Helens, one of his highlights will have been the drop goal he slotted in August to hand the Saints a 17-16 win over Salford Red Devils.
