“Not every day you get to play with the prince of Leeds” – Blake Austin reacts to Leeds Rhinos debut

Today Blake Austin made his Leeds Rhinos debut at Headingley as the Rhinos began their preparations for the 2022 season with a 34-6 win over Wakefield Trinity.

The Rhinos started slowly and trailed 6-0 after Lewis Murphy’s intercept try gave Trinity the lead however a try from fellow Leeds debutant Aidan Sezer and a brace from Ash Handley either side of halftime gave Leeds a 16-6 lead before two Harry Newman tries alongside a score from Tom Briscoe wrapped up a 34-6 Boxing Day triumph.

Alongside Austin and Sezer, fellow new signing James Bentley also made his Rhinos debut and showed some glimpses of what he could give the Rhinos in 2022 as did Sezer and Austin whose partnership at times carved open Wakefield whilst their kicking game continued to cause Trinity problems.

The pair are good friends and used to play alongside each other at Canberra taking the Raiders into the top four in 2016. Now at Leeds, they’re again hoping to excel.

Having made a superb debut this afternoon, Austin took to social media to react to his first Leeds appearance and praise a certain youngster. He said: “Not every day you get to play with the prince of Leeds. What an atmosphere, I can now officially say I’ve played rugby on Boxing Day.”

The prince of Leeds in question is of course son of Leeds legend Kevin Sinfield. The 17-year-old also made his first appearance for the first team today following in the footsteps of his father who made his Super League debut at 16 against Sheffield in 1997 before guiding Leeds to seven Super League titles as the competition’s greatest ever captain.

The young man impressed alongside Austin after replacing Sezer even playing a part in Tom Briscoe’s try before nailing two conversions one of which was very difficult. He used a very similar style to his father’s kicking routine and received a huge reaction from the crowd.

Austin clearly felt Sinfield did well in his first outing praising him in the Insta post with a picture alongside young Sinfield and Sezer. Between the two Australians they could have exactly what they need to develop the youngster into a star of the future.
