Newcastle Thunder and Dewsbury Rams play out thriller as Rams dealt blow in race for survival

Dewsbury Rams desperately need a win if they’re going to avoid slipping into the Betfred League 1 at the end of the year.

London Broncos’ recent resurgence in form which saw them defeat the Rams recently has seen them climb well out of Dewsbury’s reach on nine points. They even sit outside the bottom three after leapfrogging Whitehaven on points difference.

Five points adrift of safety, few expected Dewsbury to get anything from their trip to Newcastle who recently put 50 passed Bradford but the Rams found themselves in a winning position.

They took a 12-0 thanks to tries from Paul Sykes from a Reiss Butterworth break before a lovely finish from Lewis Carr in the corner would double the Rams’ lead.

By halftime they had an 18-10 with tries from Ollie Roberts of Huddersfield Giants and Gideon Boafo’s length of the field effort trimming the Rams’ lead before Butterworth scored a deserved try to make it 18-10 at the break.

In the second half, Lewis Carr doubled his money as the Rams looked set for victory at 22-10 but a superb comeback from Newcastle turned the game on its head.

Jack Johnson started things just after the hour before Wigan man Sam Halsall nudged Newcastle closer.

Star man Boafo then got his second of the game to give Newcastle a 24-22 lead with Jake Shorrocks having a difficult day with the boot.

Dewsbury were able to nick a point thanks to a Paul Sykes penalty after a successful short restart but it was a day that Dewsbury were presented a chance to win and squandered it.

They’re still four points adrift of safety.
