Newcastle Knights captain could miss the entire season

It could be devastating news for the Newcastle Knights, as captain Jayden Brailey could face being sidelined for most – if not all – of the 2022 NRL season.

Hooker Brailey will have surgery this week after scans confirmed he suffered a torn Achilles at training, with a four to six month wait expected to be the prognosis.

The Sunday Telegraph revealed that Brailey suffered the injury at training on Saturday in a non-impact drill, which makes the news even more shocking.

NRL Physio Brien Seeney tweeted: “Jayden Brailey is reportedly preparing for surgery on his achilles injury as soon as this week (via @DaveRic1). Would confirm a likely rupture, the sooner the better for surgery.”

The blow means that back-up hooker Chris Randall is likely to become Newcastle’s starting number 9 with Adam Clune also being in Knights head coach Adam O’Brien’s reckoning following Brailey’s confirmed absence.

The Knights open their 2022 NRL campaign away to the Sydney Roosters at the Sydney Cricket Ground on March 12.
