Newcastle Knights announce major new signing as interest in Wigan Warriors star Bevan French officially ended

Back in September Super League fans were both shocked and delighted to hear the news that Wigan Warriors’ star Bevan French was signing a new two-year contract with the club.

French has been a brilliant addition to the Super League in his two seasons with the Warriors, not least last season when he was the league’s top try scorer.

More impressive from French was that he managed that feat without playing all the games, 31 tries in just 20 games was sure to catch the eyes of everyone in the rugby league world.

Lots of that attention came from down under with a switch back to the NRL seeming very likely.

French, only 26, formerly played for Parramatta Eels and tallied an impressive try total there as well so it was assumed and feared by many Super League fans that he would return to the NRL.

The main pursuers of French were Newcastle Knights who were coming off a poor season having placed 14th in the 16 team NRL.

Because of this they were going all out to secure French and solidify their try scoring capabilities. But that intrest was quelled when the speedster signed a new deal at the DW Stadium.

And now it’s been announced that the Knights have arranged a swap deal with Gold Coast Titans and are sending hooker Chris Randall to acquire winger Greg Marzhew – news that puts to bed well a truly any move in the short term for French.

Marzhew has a similar profile to French in that he’s a similar age, 25, and is a try scorer as well, tallying 15 in 25 since his debut.

With this deal over the line for the Knights, Wigan fans and Super League fans can be certain that French will playing his rugby in England this upcoming season and most likely the one after.
