New twist in relegation debate as Super League prepares for controversial move

Brian Carney took to Sky Sports on Sunday evening to declare that there will be no relegation from Super League in 2021.

Though there is yet to be official confirmation from either Super League or the RFL, there is a feeling that such a move is going to happen due to the impending restructure of the sport.

Despite RFL and Super League officials rejecting such a claim, the momentum has been set towards realignment between both bodies – which is likely to reveal a whole host of new agreements.

Hull KR boss Tony Smith has already spoken out against going forward with relegation for 2021 considering the impact of COVID-19 and the subsequent uncertainty, with speculation that two teams from the Championship are expected to be given the opportunity to compete in the top-flight in 2022.

It would mean that Leigh – who haven’t won a Super League game all year – would survive by the skin of their teeth and live to fight another day.

The debate surrounding relegation, however, is far from over as rugby league enters a very tough decision-making time.

Interesting, does this mean back to two league format again? So, we can assume Toulouse, then perhaps fev going up. This makes the second tier more evenly matched, but what about third tier joining second, given that Swinton have won one game, seems a big gap between top and bottom. But then I guess, as a Swinton fan, at least you would see more competitive games, but more misery for Wales??
In sort, whether it’s super league or single second division, you will get a big gap between top and bottom, but at least some games will be competitive, NO offensive intended to Leigh or Swinton fans!!!

How can you change the rules during the season, pandemic or not? It’s pathetic & shows how amateur the game is in comparison to other sports, run by an incompetent amateur governing body. with no balls who pander to certain groups. As a Swinton fan we deserve to be relegated coz we are by far the poorest team in the Championship (cue all the excuses from Swinton management).

Total farce again!! An absolute embarrassment and an amateur approach. A shameful way to treat fans and clubs

So basically the teams in the lower divisions have nothing to play for? You can always rely upon the RFL when it comes to mindless decisions
