We have seen some great performances from halfbacks so far in Super League this year such as Blake Austin at Leeds Rhinos in recent weeks, Harry Smith at Wigan Warriors, George Williams at Warrington Wolves and of course Jake Clifford at Hull FC and Lachlan Lam at Leigh Leopards who have really caught the eye lately.
Not dismissing the injured Jordan Abdull at Hull KR and the always brilliant Brodie Croft at Salford Red Devils and the veteran Jonny Lomax at St Helens, it has been Clifford and Lam who have been the real standout performers in 2023 and thus both have been linked with NRL moves.
Meanwhile, Catalans Dragons could be set to lose their halfbacks Mitchell Pearce and Tyrone May to the NRL and Leeds and Wigan are also in the market for halfbacks.
So, many clubs have interest in halfbacks so it will be interesting to see if any move for Kyle Flanagan.
Kyle Flanagan could have be a Super League player right now.
There have always been rumours that Flanagan could move to Super League. The Canterbury Bulldogs halfback had been tipped to join Leeds Rhinos last year.
This came when Leeds Chief Executive Gary Hetherington was in Australia looking for a new coach and it was reported he was considering a move for Flanagan and his father Shane who coached Cronulla Sharks to the NRL title in 2016.
This of course never happened with Hetherington appointing Rohan Smith instead.
Then there were rumours linking Flanagan to Hull FC after Josh Reynolds’ departure who is ironically back at the Bulldogs alongside Flanagan.
Again, this never happened. But according to the Sydney Morning Herald, Flanagan had a move to a Super League club lined up but rejected the chance to move to England.
His advisor Wayne Beavis found Flanagan an English club according to the Herald but Flanagan back flipped on the move to stay at Canterbury in the hope he could cement the number seven shirt.
Nonetheless, he didn’t make the move to England but is still expected to leave the Bulldogs as he enters the final year of his deal and can negotiate with other clubs and according to the Reports he is set to use his father’s links to get a move potentially to St George Illawarra Dragons or Manly Sea Eagles.
Shane Flanagan is now in charge of the Dragons and a family reunion could be on the cards and this is becoming more likely with the Daily Telegraph reporting as such.
