Nephew of former Hull KR star granted NRL release to make Super League return

The nephew of former Hull KR star Josh Hodgson has reportedly been released from his NRL contract in order to pursue an opportunity back home in England.

Josh Hodgson called time on his career last season after making just 12 appearances with new side Parramatta Eels. The 34-year-old started his career with Hull FC before crossing the city to become a Hull KR legend.

After five seasons at Craven Park, the NRL came knocking and Hodgson would go on to play 138 times for the Canberra Raiders. During his time out in Australia he would be joined by nephew Bailey Hodgson.

Bailey moved down under in 2021 after making just one Super League appearance for Castleford Tigers, debuting in Round 17 of the 2020 season at age 18 against Hull KR.

Despite making an impact in the New South Wales Cup, Hodgson is yet to play a regular season NRL game and has only been limited to four pre-season appearances. It’s now being reported that he will return to England for a Super League move.

Bailey Hodgson initially joined Newcastle Knights whilst down under but was picked up by Manly Sea Eagles ahead of the current 2024 season and despite making 15 appearances in the NSW Cup, he’s yet to taste NRL action.

It was during the NSW Cup coverage on Fox that news of Hodgson’s release and imminent UK return was announced with Darcie McDonald breaking the news. That was later reported by The League Scene Pod.

Having come through at Castleford Tigers, Hodgson will clearly have connections there but in Tex Hoy, the Tigers have their full-back for the future.

There’s also his Hull KR connection via his uncle but the Robins are also well-stocked in the position with another former Cas youngster Jack Broadbent covering for incumbent Niall Evalds during Hull KR’s win over Leeds Rhinos yesterday.

Reports have now emerged from Rugby League Live that Leigh Leopards are set to sign the 21-year-old with the club set to lose Zak Hardaker at the end of the season.

Hodgson would likely play behind his former Newcastle Knights teammate David Armstrong who is set to arrive at the club in 2025.
