Morgan Smith bids farewell to Featherstone Rovers as he confirms Super League move

It’s been a big week for Featherstone who have begun heading down a new direction by appointing new Head Coach and former Leeds Rhinos assistant Sean Long after the resignation of Brian McDermott in the wake of a shock play-off exit against Batley Bulldogs.

However, Long will be without one of Featherstone’s top players from 2022 as he looks to win promotion in 2023 as Morgan Smith heads to pastures new.

Smith is a Featherstone lad and in his farewell on Twitter noted how proud he was to represent his home town but confirmed Super League is where he is heading and that he could not pass up this opportunity but didn’t confirm to which club.

He said: “Dear Blue Wall,

“As a Featherstone lad, it’s meant the world to me to pull on that butchers striped shirt in front of you this year, there is obviously a strong connection between my family and the club and I’m very proud to have added my own chapter to that story.

“I have always aspired to be a Super League player, having been there before earlier in my career, the opportunity to join a Super League club at this point in my career is an opportunity I can’t turn down.

“I am so very grateful for the opportunity this club gave me, and whilst I won’t be in a Rovers shirt next season, this club will always be very close to my heart. I wish everyone at the club the very best of luck and look forward to following Rovers’ success on the field in 2023.”

It is widely rumoured that Smith will replace Jacob Miller at Wakefield in 2023 alongside Mason Lino.

Miller has joined Castleford for next year alongside Gareth Widdop.
