St Helens star Morgan Knowles has assessed the “lessons” the club must learn after their defeat to Salford Red Devils whilst the England international has also provided an update on his own fitness.
Knowles played around 20 minutes in the 40-12 defeat that also served as the Cumbrian’s testimonial match following ten years of service for St Helens.
During those ten years, Knowles has become an integral part of the St Helens squad with the loose forward racking up over 200 appearances. He recently spoke to Serious About Rugby League to outline his future with the club.
After Saturday’s match, he spoke to SaintsTV about the game: “It was a really special day for myself and my family. It was a great turnout today so thank you to everyone that came down.
“It’s really special and pretty humbling for so many people to turn out. It means a lot.
“It’s obviously not the result that we wanted on the field but I think there are a lot of lessons that were learnt.”
Head coach Paul Wellens had a similar assessment, having explained: “It gives us all a reminder of where we’re at and what we need to work on.”

St Helens don’t have another pre-season game with the Red Vee now turning their focus to Round Three of the Challenge Cup, where they will face amateur side West Hull, and Round One of Super League, when they will host Salford once again.
Noting that, Knowles said: “We’ve got to play Salford again in a few week’s time so we’ll learn those lessons, have a look and be better for it.”
Whilst all three NRL signings played and there was a lot of first-team players, the Saints squad did feature a lot of younger players including the likes of Harry Robertson – who scored the first try for St Helens.
Asked how he felt those young players fared, Knowles said: “Really good, they keep showing signs of real promise. When they get their opportunity this year, which they will, they’ll deliver like they always go at this great club.”
Despite only getting 20 minutes of action, the loose forward revealed that he is in the best condition he has ever been in with his injuries now all behind him as he enters his 11th season as a Saint.
The 28-year-old said: “I feel great, the body feels as good as it has ever felt. I’m on top of all of my injuries and they’re in the past now.
“I’m looking forward to personally getting back to my best this year and getting on the upward trajectory.”
