Mitchell Pearce reveals why he left behind the NRL to join Catalans Dragons

Mitchell Pearce’s future was one of the most talked about towards the back end of the 2021 Super League season.

The halfback still had a year to run on his Newcastle Knights deal, but decided to change things up and head to the European Super League with the Catalans Dragons.

Pearce signed a two-year deal, but has now revealed just why he made the move, citing both personal and professional reasons.

“I had a break-up last year with my ex-fiancee, so that was a tough year and that was one reason,” Pearce said.

“I then opened up my mind to something different when Steve and the club approached me – it opened up curiosity.

“The back end of last year, the way the season went with the off -ield stuff and the way I was feeling, this opportunity stimulated something inside me about me coming overseas.

“I had one more season with Newcastle and the challenge to come over for two years came up.

“To get out of the same bubble, you can’t explain it – I couldn’t ignore it and the more I delved into it and the more thinking I did, it felt right.”

Pearce was also keen to stress that the move has been vindicated after settling in seamlessly.

“Since coming over here I feel grateful that I’ve taken the move.

“It’s a breath of fresh air and I feel really motivated for the next few years.”
