Hull KR man Elliot Minchella has opened up about his side’s remarkable 2024 season ahead of their first Super League Grand Final.
The Robins finished second in the league, just two points behind league leaders Wigan Warriors – and could easily have finished top.
Minchella has been one of their standout performers in what is surely his best season to date – but has missed the past two games due to a ban picked up for a high shot on Leigh Leopards man Matt Moylan.
However, he’ll be back for the Grand Final this weekend, and will hope to help his team to a maiden Grand Final victory.
Elliot Minchella describes Hull KR culture ahead of Super League Grand Final
Speaking on The Bench Podcast with Jenna Brooks and Jon Wilkin, he said about being the club captain: “I’ve absolutely loved it, to be honest. I went and approached Willie about it and it’s something I wanted to do. I went to speak to him in the pre-season.
“I put my name forward and said it’s something I want to be. I want to lead the club, it’s something I’m passionate about and I wanted to do it here. So I made no secret of that.
“I think I went to see [Willie Peters] in November and then in our last session before Christmas break, he told me then and I was over the moon.”
He continued, referring to the culture of the club, saying: “I’ve absolutely loved the year. It’s been difficult at times but we’ve got such a good group of leaders.
“The boys in the past who are not with us anymore like Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Kane Linnett and Lachlan Coote, what they’ve built over the last sort of two or three years, we’ve just continued that.
“I’m talking about the standards and culture so it’s been a really easy transition to be honest with you. I’ve not done anything sort of different than what I would normally do.
“They’ve done the work and I’m just sort of holding the torch now and then I’ll pass it on to someone else but that’s culture.”
He’ll be hoping the culture can spur them on to a historic victory on Saturday.
