Mikey Lewis shows maturity beyond his years with Hull KR message

Super League on TV

Hull KR may be on top of the Super League table but they’ve won nothing yet. That’s the level-headed message from talismanic half-back Mikey Lewis, who turned in one of the individual performances of the season against Warrington Wolves on Friday night at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Lewis scored a try and set one up as Rovers beat the Wire 22-4 to move ahead of Wigan Warriors in the table. The England international’s defensive work did not go unnoticed either with Lewis notably digging deep to help the east Hull outfit over the line for a deserved and dominant win.

With seven rounds of action remaining, it’s fair to say Willie Peters’ side are in the perfect position to kick on towards silverware this season, with a Grand Final win the ultimate goal. Rovers have to get there first, of course, and Lewis, who at 23 consistently displays maturity beyond his years, knows his side still have plenty of work to do over the coming weeks.

“We haven’t won anything tonight,” Lewis told Sky Sports after the game. “We’ve still got seven or eight weeks to work hard still and we can’t look too far ahead.

“We’ve got to take one game at a time and what will be, will be. That crowd that’s travelled again is unreal and we feel that on the field when it gets tough.

“It feels good (going top) but we haven’t won anything yet, we’ve got to stay there, we’ve got to be consistently playing well. We’re looking forward to it and looking up.”

On Rovers’ remarkably defensive work against the Wolves, he added: “We’re a defensive team and we want to put our defence first. We’ve got the players in this team to spark up and that’s what we did. We trusted the process and we took the opportunity.”

It’s fair to say Lewis, who produced five attacking kicks, three tackle busts and a clean break as well as making 23 tackles himself, was the standout performer on the field against Warrington as he dominated the battle many highlighted pre-match between him and George Williams.

“I didn’t put much pressure on it because I know how good George is,” the Hull KR man said. “It feels good but we haven’t won anything yet and that battle against George is going to be here for years to come. I love playing against George.”
