Mikey Lewis sent a warning to the rest of Super League on Friday night as he outlined his belief that his best is yet to come in a Hull KR shirt.
The half-back turned in yet another man of the match-worthy performance at Craven Park as Willie Peters’ Robins saw off Salford Red Devils 32-12 to secure their spot at the top of the Super League table for at least one more week.
Lewis scored one of KR’s six tries on the night, with Jack Broadbent getting over for a brace, while Jez Litten, Tom Opacic and Jai Whitbread also touched down in east Hull. The 23-year-old managed to kick four goals, too, while racking up a remarkable 10 tackle busts in 13 carries.
He’s arguably been Super League’s most dangerous player this season, but unbelievably he still feels as though he has more to give.
“There’s a lot more,” Lewis told Sky Sports when asked if he had more gears to go through in his game. “I’ve got to be in the game a little bit more. It’s a mindset thing, I’m working on that every week. The more times I’m in the game, I’m buzzing around and that’s my game. I’m loving it.”
Hull KR ‘s win over Salford puts them in pole position to end their 39-year wait for a major trophy with the League Leaders’ Shield now in sight. Of course, they still have three more games to play but with Rovers going to second place Wigan Warriors next Friday, they know a ninth win in a row would be enough to all but secure top spot.
“We’re grinding every week and taking it week by week,” a firmly grounded Lewis added. “The hard work is paying off at the moment and we’ve still got three more games so we’ll keep doing what we’re doing and see where we are after that.
“We’re just backing ourselves but not getting ahead of ourselves and that’s the main thing. We’re grinding, we’ve got fresh bodies and the results are how we want to play. We’re sticking to a game plan and it’s working, we’ll come back on Monday and have a review and that first half I felt we had a couple of gears in us.
“We’re experienced in these bigger games now. Next week will be a massive test but we’re going to go there confident. In the dressing room there’s more than one voice this year. There was two or three last year with Shaun Kenny-Dowall and Kane Linnett and now there’s Tyrone, myself, Jez, Dean Hadley, there’s so many having a part in what we do.”
