Hull KR won’t be disheartened as they prepare to launch a push to go one better next year. That’s the message from Mikey Lewis after Saturday’s 9-2 Super League Grand Final defeat to Wigan Warriors at Old Trafford.
Bevan French scored the only try of the game on the night and that ultimately proved to be the difference as Willie Peters’ east Hull outfit struggled to find openings in Wigan’s resolute defensive line. KR’s only points in the game came through Lewis, as the half-back kicked a second half penalty at the Theatre of Dreams.
It wasn’t the performance they had hoped for in their first appearance in a Grand Final, but the Robins will be better off for the experience as they look to go again with a slightly different squad in 2025.
“Watching Wigan lift the trophy was hard but it’s given me that fire in my belly to come back and put the wrongs right,” the Hull KR half-back said after the game as he spoke to the press.
“One of the lads said to me that sometimes you’ve got to lose one to come back and win one. I thought, ‘Do you know what? There’s no reason why we can’t come back and win it next year’. That’s what we want to do.
“There weren’t a lot of points in it and we battled till the end. They had their chance in the first half and iced it. That’s all it came down to. They’ve got world-class players and experience in these types of games.
“We’ll learn from it. IÂ loved being out there. Even though we didn’t get the win, it was a little dream come true to walk out in front of a 74,000 stadium at Old Trafford. That’s what dreams are made of.
“We’ll have a rest, come back in pre-season and have another big year next year.”
